In terms of promoting yourself as a musician, or your band it's extremely important to be able to communicate who you are and what you do - what kind of music you play. The truth is if you can describe your band's brand in words (written and/or verbal) this will be one of the greatest marketing tools in your arsenal.
The reason this is so important is because more than not, at least when engaging potential new fans, they won't have had the opportunity to actually listen to your music to decide if they like it or not. If you're engaging in a conversation with someone you just met and they're interested what you do with music you'll want to be prepared to talk about it in a way that entices the other person to want to find out more.
